Raffles Junior College Website Banners (Singapore) Vision When Sir Stamford Raffles founded Raffles Institution (RI) in 1823, his vision was for the school to be a premier educational institution which would serve the country well. This vision for the school to be the Hope of a Better Age is immortalised in the school motto, Auspicium Melioris Aevi. RJC, which shares RI’s history, is similarly guided by this vision. Core Purpose Led by the vision of Auspicium Melioris Aevi, RJC’s mission is to nurture thinkers, leaders and pioneers, men and women with character, confidence and commitment, who will serve by leading and lead in serving whatever their chosen paths may be. Crest RJC’s crest, which features both the gryphon and the eagle prominently, graphically presents the college’s values and goals. The gryphon, a mythological creature known for its strength and speed, is depicted in the crest as being set in a crown in all its majesty. This is a symbol of the college’s success in all its endeavours, particularly when it is equipped with the strength of the gryphon in the face of challenges and the speed of the gryphon in adapting deftly to the myriad changes in the social, economic and educational landscape. The eagle, a mighty and majestic creature which rules the skies is portrayed in the crest as double-headed, with each head looking in opposite directions. One head looks back on the glories of the past while the other looks ahead to possibilities brimming in the future. The double-headed eagle represents our tradition of constantly drawing strength from our past achievements and, at the same time, forging ahead with an eye on a brighter future. Anthem When Stamford Raffles held the torch That cast Promethean Flame We faced the challenge of the day To give our school a name The eagle eye and gryphon strength They led us to the fore To reign supreme in ev’ry sphere The sons of Singapore Come heed the call Rafflesians all And let our hearts be stirring We’ll do our best whate’er test And keep our colours flying Let comradeship and fervent hope With one voice make us pray Auspicium Melioris Aevi With God to guide the way Composed by E W Jesudason, Headmaster, Raffles Institution, 1963-1966
