Besides ther fact that the old paths were 2D and the new are 3D, the new ones allow controlling the position of the driven object during animations, based on the number of frames in them. You can set the driven object position by control point, while with the original 2D paths, it’s always from zero to 100% from the first control point to the last. These new paths give us more control, which is always good.
