It started with 8 little Nonya girls in a house in Cross Street. Later, it moved to Telok Ayer Street and was known as Telok Ayer Girls’ School. In 1912, the school moved to 178 Neil Road and was renamed Fairfield Girls’ School as the building was put up with a substantial donation of US$5,000 from an American, Mr Fairfield. Its name was later changed to Fairfield Methodist Girls’ School in 1958. The school was run by expatriate principals until the outbreak of the War in 1941. After the war, the school functioned for a short while on borrowed premises in Pearls’ Hill School under the headship of the late Mrs Lim Bock Kee. In 1946, the premises in Neil Road were returned to the school authorities. Mrs Lim Bock Kee remained as the principal until 1959. She was succeeded by Miss Lim Geok Kheng, an ‘old’ girl as well as teacher of the school. Miss Lim was the principal until her retirement in December 1982. The retirement of Miss Lim also marked the end of a chapter in the history of Fairfield. It ceased to be a full all-girls’ school and it was named Fairfield Methodist Primary School and Fairfield Methodist Secondary School. Another marked change was that both schools became co-educational and the significance of all these is that it became the first Methodist School to be re-located and to go co-educational. The school was officially declared open on 2nd August 1985 by Bishop Ho Chee Sin of the Methodist Church in Singapore. It started off with 1455 pupils in 37 classes. Miss Cheong Yuen Lin became its first principal. She was with the school until 1988 when she was posted to the Ministry of Education to become an Inspector of Schools. Miss Dorothy Ho succeeded Miss Cheong as Principal of the school in 1989. After having served the school for more than a decade, she retired at the end of 2001. Mrs Tan Shook Fund took over the principalship in 2002. In 2004, Mr Charles Tong was appointed the new Principal. Under Mr Tong’s principalship, FMPS went single session in 2005. He was the first male Principal in Fairfield’s 117 years of history. Mr Tong remained at the helm from 2004 to 2008. In December 2008, Mrs Chaillan Mui Tuan took over the helm as Principal of Fairfield Methodist School (Primary). In January 2009, the name of the school was changed to Fairfield Methodist School (Primary). The change was to reflect the common founding, heritage and Methodist ethos of both the Primary and the Secondary schools in the Fairfield family. School’s Crest & Motto The emblem of the heart which forms the central motif of the school crest represents the highest of all emotions Love – the love of God for Man and the love of Man for his neighbour. When the heart is Pure and Honest, the Holy Spirit can dwell within and transform the nature of the individual, ennobling it and refining it. Summounting the heart is the torch of Knowledge and Wisdom which can illuminate the mind and broaden the vision of all who seek its light. Emblazoned in a band of burnished gold across the emblem of the heart are the initials of the school; it represents the Loyalty for the Alma Mater. The two stars that are at the base of the crest reflect the school motto, PURE & HONEST, ideals which every student should aspire to attain.
